Dragon Boat Racing and the Nottingham Riverside Festival
Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today - as well as the most fun! Up to 10 people paddle each 30’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit!
Gable Events has joined with Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People to bring you the fourth dragon boat challenge to be staged as part of the Nottingham Riverside Festival. The Dragon Boat Challenge takes place on Sunday 5th August 2012 and up to 50 crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at the Victoria Embankment watched by thousands of spectators. The Riverside Festival is one of Nottingham’s largest family events and includes a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world. The Dragon Boat Challenge is supported by City Life magazine and is set to be one of the highlights of the 2012 Riverside Festival staged by Nottingham City Council.
Standard entry to the Nottingham Dragon Boat Challenge includes:
- Dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment
- At least 3 races per crew
- Family entertainment of the Riverside Festival
- Souvenir programme
- Trophies for the top three crews, the best-placed mixed crew (minimum 5 ladies), the crew raising the most money for Rainbows Hospice and the ‘best dressed’ crew
- Medals for the top three crews
- Special meal at Opium Bar and Restaurant in Nottingham for the crew raising the most money for Rainbows Hospice
Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People
As any parent will tell you, to look into the eyes of a sick child is a deeply moving experience. To know your child has a limited life must be the greatest human challenge any of us could imagine. If a family ever has to cope with this, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People will be there for them.
Rainbows is the only children's hospice in the East Midlands and cares for over 230 local children and their families every year. An incredible team helps to control symptoms, improve quality of life and provide end of life care. Rainbows gets less than 10% of its funding from the government and therefore relies almost solely on the generosity of members of the public, fundraising events and sponsorship.
Katie Baxter, Events Manager at Rainbows says, “The Dragon Boat Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for teams to have fun whilst raising essential money for an amazing charity. Everyone involved will really be helping to make a difference for children and families who are facing extraordinary challenges.”
