Dragon Boat Racing and the Milton Keynes Festival

Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today - as well as the most fun! Up to 16 people paddle each 40’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit!

Gable Events has joined with Willen Hospice to bring you the 12th spectacular Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival. The Festival is open to everyone and up to 60 crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course, watched by several thousand spectators. Willen Lake offers a superb venue for racing and a fabulous day is guaranteed with bankside entertainment, music, food and fun activities for all the family.

Standard entry to the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival includes:

• Dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment
• At least 3 races per crew
• Music and entertainment
• Souvenir programme
• Trophies for the top five crews, the best-placed mixed crew (minimum seven ladies), the crew raising the most money for Willen Hospice and the ‘best dressed’ crew
• Medals for the top three crews
• A £300 voucher towards a celebratory meal at The Swan in Salford for the crew raising the most money for Willen Hospice

Willen Hospice

Willen Hospice is an independent charity that provides complex and individual care to individuals from the age of 18 years with life limiting illnesses who reside in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas. The Hospice is based at a quiet lakeside location close to the City Centre.

Our care is assuring, equally accessible and advanced and often takes place in the patient’s own home. All the services are provided free by a highly skilled team of professionals and focus on four key areas: specialist symptom control, emotional support, spiritual support and care for carers.

We get less than a quarter of our funding from the NHS so rely heavily on the local community to support us with raising in excess of £4 million a year which will enable us to continue to provide the excellent service for which Willen Hospice has become so well known.

"Our vision is to be the lasting and thriving provider of free care to all people affected by life limiting illness in our community”. We need the support of the local community to provide us with financial stability to ensure that we are ‘always there to care’.
