Last chance to enter a team into the East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival in Lowestoft on Saturday 31st August

With just a few weeks to go until the annual East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival takes place on Oulton Broad in Lowestoft, there’s still time to get your team together and join over 20 companies and organisations on the start line.

The Dragon Boat Challenge on Saturday 31st August is always one of the highlights of the regional calendar and no previous experience is needed to take part, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm. Don’t worry if you think winning is out of the question as medals and trophies are awarded for the top three crews, top mixed crew and the ‘best dressed’ crew (as fancy as possible!).

Amongst the new and returning crews that have already booked their places are QD Stores, Lovewell Blake, Netmatters, OneLife Suffolk, Colosseum Dental, Associated British Ports, Scottish Power Renewables, James Fisher Marine Services, Grosvenor Casino and Continental Product Engineering. Festival sponsor Warner Leisure Hotels will also have four teams battling it out this year, with local teams from Corton and Gunton Hall being joined by crews representing their hotels in Newark and North Wales.

The colourful 30’ dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided by race organisers, Gable Events, and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. All crews have the option to raise sponsorship for a favourite charity and St Elizabeth Hospice, RNLI Lowestoft Lifeboat and Centre 81 are just three of the local good causes set to benefit.

The Festival, supported by Lowestoft Journal, promises a fantastic day for competitors and spectators alike with children’s rides and plenty of food and drink for all the family on the bankside. There will be a race every 10-15 minutes from 11.30am and the climax of the Festival this year will be a spectacular flypast by a Battle of Britain Spitfire scheduled for 3.30pm. Entry is free to spectators and there is ample ‘pay and display’ parking available.

Hotels go ‘head-to-head’!

Hotels go ‘head-to-head’ at the
East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival this August!

The eagerly anticipated East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival, supported by Lowestoft Journal, is a great opportunity for local companies, organisations and clubs to enter a team and do battle on the waters of Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, whilst raising money for the charity of their choice.

For the last few years, there has been particularly heightened friendly rivalry between two of the entered teams, Gunton Hall and Corton Coastal Village. With owners Warner Leisure Hotels as race sponsor, and the addition of two new crews representing their holiday resorts in Newark and North Wales, the competition is set to be hotter than ever when the teams take to the waters of Oulton Broad on Saturday 31st August.

Whilst all four Warner crews are looking forward to a superb day out, a fantastic team building event and the chance to raise important funds for their nominated charity, Macmillan Cancer Support, the crew managers from each team admit that beating the other will make the day that little bit more special. This will be Gunton Hall’s fifth year at the event and Corton’s fourth with the teams sharing the honours so far in the ‘head to heads’.

Corton’s General Manager, Fern Chapman, is ready for the challenge; “Our team is gearing up for what I’m sure will be another fantastic event. We narrowly pipped Gunton to the post in the third heat last year, and we’re looking forward to taking on the two new Warner teams from Thoresby Hall and Bodelwyddan Castle this time around. The event really brings the community together and it’s a great opportunity for us to raise much needed funds for our chosen charity, Macmillan.”

Gunton’s new General Manager Mina Fattahi agrees, “The Dragon Boat Festival is one that the Gunton Hall team has come to look forward to each year, and we can’t wait to reignite the friendly rivalry between our friends over at Corton. It was a very close race last year and we’re expecting the same level of anticipation in this year’s race.”

This battle of the hotels is sure to add some extra spice to what promises to be a fantastic day’s racing and it also gives other hotels and resorts an opportunity to put their name forward and enter a team to try and become the best in the region.

To take part in the dragon boat racing, no previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm! The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. The Festival is an open charity event with entrants invited to raise money for the charity of their choosing. Teams opting for the popular gold and silver entry packages, which include a charity donation as well as marketing benefits, can also nominate their favourite charity to benefit from their donation.

Gunton Hall and Corton Coastal Villages, both in Lowestoft, are in a portfolio of 14 country and coastal properties around the UK owned by Warner Leisure Hotels which specialises in activity breaks for adults. Warner Leisure Hotels is the proud sponsor of the 2019 East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival and they are working together with partner charity, Macmillan Cancer Support to fund a range of help and advice for people affected by cancer.

Boat Race with a difference!

The East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival – a Boat Race with a difference!

All eyes will be focussed on the River Thames between Putney and Mortlake this Sunday for the Oxford v Cambridge University Boat Race when double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell becomes the oldest man to represent one of the crews for this annual test of strength and stamina at the remarkable age of 46. If James has inspired you to take to the water and try something different this summer, why not get some colleagues/friends together and enter a team in the 13th East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival?

The East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival, sponsored by Warner Leisure Hotels, takes place on Oulton Broad in Lowestoft on Saturday 31st August and there’s plenty of time to get a team together and guarantee a place on the start line.

Unlike the University Boat Race crews who average 6’ 4” and 14 stone for the men and 5’ 10” and 11 stone for the women, you don’t need the physique of Sir Steve Redgrave or Dame Katherine Grainger to be successful as dragon boat racing caters for people of all shapes, sizes and levels of fitness. No previous experience is required to take part, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm!

Under the expert guidance of a qualified helm provided by organisers Gable Events, your crew of up to 11 people will soon be paddling in time and bonding together as you race towards the finish line over the 200m race course. Each team gets three attempts to improve their race times with everyone having an equal chance of reaching the semi-finals. Over 30 crews are expected to battle it out and all will be seeking to knock Norfolk Drywall from Norwich off their pedestal as reigning champions.

Leading web design, IT support and digital marketing agency, Netmatters based in Wymondham, are regular entrants (and previous champions) and Director, Chris Gulliver explained how taking part in the Festival has helped his business, “We enter for team bonding, to promote a healthy living culture within the workplace and to motivate and inspire not only those working here at Netmatters but also those we work with. Paddlers and non-paddlers, their friends and family are all encouraged to get involved which strengthens relationships inside and outside the workplace. A positive atmosphere brings with it a whole raft of benefits, motivated team spirits translate directly into efficiency and productivity”.

The Dragon Boat Festival is an open charity event with entrants invited to raise money for the charity of their choosing. Teams opting for the popular gold and silver entry packages, which include a charity donation as well as marketing benefits, can also nominate their favourite charity to benefit from their donation.

Specialising in UK short activity breaks for adults, Warner Leisure Hotels will have two local teams entered into the event from their Gunton Hall and Corton Coastal Villages, as well as two teams representing their resorts in Newark and North Wales! The four Warner crews will be fundraising for their partner charity Macmillan Cancer Support.

QD takes to the water as local businesses sign up for the East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival

East Anglian discount retailer QD – QualityDiscounts.com is looking forward to swapping great prices for paddles as one of the first teams to sign up for this year’s East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival

Taking place on Saturday 31st August at Oulton Broad in Lowestoft, the Dragon Boat Festival will see more than 30 teams competing over a 200 metre race course, all hoping to paddle their 30 foot Chinese dragon boat to victory.

QD’s team – named Quality Drenchers – comprises staff from QD’s stores in Lowestoft and Beccles and the South View Cherry Lane Garden Centre in Fritton, as well as the Group’s head office. The team of 11, none of whom have any boat racing experience, are rising to the challenge to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH), which has been QD’s chosen charity for the past four years. QD has raised more than £101,000 to date towards EACH’s nook appeal.

Carla Riches, store manager of QD Lowestoft, said: “This is our first time taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival. As a local retailer, we’re keen to get involved with local community events such as this and we’re delighted to be able to raise funds for our chosen charity at the same time. None of our team have competed in an event like this before so all 11 of us are in the same boat, literally! It’s going to be a great day and we’re looking forward to putting our oar-some new paddling skills to the test.”

The original concept of QD’s quality discounted retailing was first established back in 1985 by the company’s CEO Nick Rubin’s father, and current Chairman, Danny Rubins. The aim was to offer customers a wide range of constantly changing, quality products at discounted prices, which led to the stores’ name QD – short for Quality Discounts.

The QD crew will be joined on the start line in August by teams from across the East Anglian region and even further afield. Local teams, Lovewell Blake and previous champions Netmatters have already signed up alongside four teams representing race sponsor, Warner Leisure Hotels which will be made up of staff from their resorts in Lowestoft, Newark and North Wales.

To take part in the dragon boat racing, no previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm! The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. There will also be a variety of bankside entertainment to enjoy such as funfair rides, children’s activities and food stalls.

Here come the dragons!

Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Gable Events and Warner Leisure Hotels are celebrating Chinese New Year by inviting entries into the 13th East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival. This popular annual event returns to Oulton Broad in Lowestoft on Saturday 31st August and more than 30 crews are expected to battle it out in 30’ brightly painted Chinese dragon boats over the 200m race course, watched by a large audience of spectators.

An ancient Chinese history
Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history, dating back 2,000 years to the Kingdom of Chu, where local fishermen used their paddles to stave off vicious fish in a valiant attempt to save drowning warrior poet Qu Yuan. Their efforts failed and in Hong Kong a Dragon Boat Festival (Tuen Ng) is held annually as a re-enactment of this tragic event.

Year of the Pig
According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2019 is the year of the Pig. People born in this year are believed to be energetic, enthusiastic and blessed with good fortune – all important qualities for achieving dragon boat success in August!

Team building and fun for all
This spectacular team event takes place at Oulton Broad, Lowestoft on Saturday 31st August and is open to everyone. Each crew comprises up to 10 paddlers, a beating drummer at the front of the boat and a steering helm (provided by organisers, Gable Events) at the tail end. The dragon boats and all racing equipment are provided, each team receives three races and no previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit! The Festival promises a fantastic day for competitors and spectators alike, with catering and bankside entertainment for all the family between races.

A great fundraising opportunity
The Dragon Boat Festival offers an excellent opportunity to raise money for good causes and teams are encouraged to raise sponsorship for the charity of their own choosing. Crews opting for the popular gold and silver entry packages, which include a charity donation as well as marketing benefits, can also nominate their favourite charity to benefit from their donation.

Festival sponsor
The 2019 East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival again has the backing of title sponsor, Warner Leisure Hotels which offers holidays for adults in 14 country and coastal properties around the UK. Their two Suffolk properties, Gunton Hall and Corton Coastal Village, have been entering teams into the Dragon Boat Festival for several years and are looking forward to renewing their rivalry on 31st August alongside two new crews representing their hotels in Newark and North Wales!

Ian Gyte, Warner Leisure Hotels Operations Director, comments, “The Warner teams will again be raising vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and the friendly competitiveness has already kicked in! Our Macmillan partnership has been incredibly successful and we have surpassed our fundraising targets. Taking part in challenges like the Dragon Boat Festival ensures our team work together to raise further vital funds. Our guests are brilliant and are always keen on supporting and getting involved in fundraising challenges. I’m certain that it will be another great day for everyone involved and we are thrilled to have four Warner teams entered and be the event sponsor”

The 2019 Festival will be the fifth year running that Gunton Hall has entered a team and the fourth year for Corton Coastal Village. Carol Lester, Director of Festival organisers, Gable Events, comments, “Entering a team is a great opportunity to try something completely different, bond with colleagues, entertain clients and raise much-needed funds for a favourite charity.
